Checking in

March 25, 2020 News

I wanted to check in to see how you’re doing and provide you with a few important updates.

First, following today’s announcement by the State, I want to make sure students and families are aware that all schools and non-emergency childcare programs will remain closed throughout April until at least May 4. The City of Boston will continue to support our students during this difficult time, and families can find more information on the BPS website or by contacting 311.

I also want to give an update on the latest number of coronavirus cases in our city and Commonwealth. As of today, there are 1,838 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Massachusetts. 284 of those are Boston residents. We’re happy to hear that 25 people in Boston have made full recoveries.

However, we are saddened to report that two people in Boston have passed away due to coronavirus. Our thoughts are with those families, and with the families and loved ones of all 15 Massachusetts residents who have passed away due to this horrible virus.

Each loss reminds us why we are doing what we are doing, to slow the spread of this virus. Every single step we take is to prevent illness and loss of life, to give our medical community the time and capacity they need to do their life-saving work, to support our vulnerable populations, and to get our City through this crisis.

We must continue to uphold our own responsibilities in this crisis. We all have the power to take action and save lives. Let’s continue to practice physical distancing, wash our hands often, stay home whenever possible, and only go out for essential items. These are some of the most important steps we can take to protect those we love, especially our seniors and the most vulnerable members of our community.

And remember, social distancing doesn’t have to mean social isolation. This is a difficult time for everyone, in many ways. Regularly check in on your neighbors, friends, and loved ones. Calling or texting someone to let them know you’re thinking about them can go a long way.

It’s also important that we all take care of our mental health right now. Be kind to yourself and your loved ones. Get fresh air and safe exercise. While our playgrounds and tot lots remain closed, our parks are open for passive recreation like jogging and walking and will be great resources as the weather continues to get warmer. Please practice safe physical distancing at all times.

It’s normal to feel scared, worried, or lonely at this time. If you need someone to talk to, call our city’s 24 hour hotline at 3-1-1, and we can connect you to anonymous counseling by phone.

This is a very challenging time, but we will get through it together, one day at a time, as one great city. Everyone has a role to play, and I appreciate everyone’s strength, patience, and support.

Thank you for doing your part,

Marty
